The Smith and Wesson Model 586 is a member of the “L”-framed, .357 Magnum chambered family of revolvers announced in 1980 by S&W. The line of firearms only differed in materials used and sight types. The Model 586 is produced from blued carbon steel and has adjustable sights. The L-framed revolvers were created to answer concerns from both the K-framed and N-framed firearms. The primary concerns with these designs, which were addressed with the L-frames, were the K’s inadequate frame design when constantly firing the forceful .357 Magnum round, and, the N’s uncomfortable and bulky size. The L-frames were very calculated designs in that they were produced to be robust enough to endure constant firing with the .357 Magnum round, and also comfortable enough for continuous carrying. The Model 586 has seen enormous success in the US and other nations as an efficient combat, self-defense, hunting and sportsmen revolver.
