Description

The Galil is a lightweight and reliable assault rifle that is gas operated, air-cooled and fed by magazines which can carry anywhere from 10-50 rounds. The Galil was developed as a consequence of Israel’s experiences during the Six-Days War in 1967. After recognizing the shortcomings of the FN FAL rifle, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) sought to adopt a new, superior standard assault rifle. Developed with careful consideration to the deficiencies of the FN FAL rifle, and implementing strengths from the rivaled AK-47, the Galil was designed to be the staple firearm of the IDF for years to come. Despite high acclaim for the Galil, the weapon’s widespread implementation was interrupted due to the onset of the Israeli-Arab Yom Kippur War of 1973. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Israel received large shipments of the US M16 at the very low prices which ultimately become the major armament of the IDF. The Galil did circulate among the IDF’s Armored corps, Artillery corps and some units of the Israeli Air Forces. Since its introduction the Galil has been adopted by various militaries in South America, Africa and Asia.
