Description

When the US military sought to replace the M1911 handgun with a lighter weapon among its officers, the Colt’s Manufacturing Company responded by designing the Colt Commander. While the trials found that none of the entries were suitable at the time, Colt still entered the Commander into production. The Commander, a tweaked variant of the M1911, was unique in that it was the first regular-production pistol to be constructed from a large aluminum frame and was the first Colt handgun to be originally chambered for the 9mm round.
