Description
The AR-70/223 is a gas operated, magazine fed, selective fire weapon devised and manufactured by the famous Italian company, Beretta. During the late 1960’s Beretta sought to create a modernized weapons system chambered to the 5.56×45 NATO round to replace the Italian Army’s then-standard issue BM-59 rifles. The AR-70/223 was the first attempt by Beretta to create a weapon around this caliber and was met with mixed reviews. While the AR-70/223 was adopted by the Italian Special forces during the early 1970’s, it took fairly significant design tweaks during the next decade; to the extent that the updated version was given a new name (AR-70/90), to be officially adopted by the Italian Army.
