The Charleville Musket was a .69 caliber French musket used in the 18th/19th centuries and named after the armory in Charleville-Mézières, France. A standardized version of the musket was first created in 1717 but replaced eleven years later with a model using the signature three barrel bands to hold its 46 3/4 inch barrel in place. Modifications during the 1740s included the standardized use of a steel ramrod and the removal of the pan/frizzen bridle. Additional refinements to the musket were continuously made until the late 1770’s. A large number of Charleville muskets were secretly imported into the United States from France during the American Revolution. Once the French entered the American Revolution, their soldiers carried the same Charleville muskets into battle. The Charleville was also the most prominent firearm used throughout the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.
